Grapes

The Spanish custom of seeing in the new year with lucky grapes may be fairly new but is now well established. And what could bring more luck than to use the grapes from your own land?

It’s quite easy because grapes thrive in the warm Mediterranean climate. They need a warm, well drained soil rich in humus. If you have a hill farm they will prosper on any warm sunny slope. Ideally they like a pH of about 6.

Grapes are easily propagated from cuttings. When they have rooted, plant them out about two metres apart.

Vines fruit from the current year’s wood so prune them hard after harvesting. Just leave a few buds to produce the new growth for next year.

Alternatively train them over a frame, pergola or arch. There is nothing better in the heat of summer than to sit under the dappled shade of your own vines.
